Strategy: Possible Sentences
Rationale: Can be used as a strong pre-reading strategy and also used an effective post read/assessment activity as well. A technique that requires relatively little preparation time but is quite effective for getting students actively involved in discussing, writing, and reading, all focused on vocabulary terms (p. 243)
Procedure: Used for a pre-reading strategy
- Single out five to eight key vocabulary words and list them on the board.
- Have students make up sentences using each word
- Vote which sentence(s) are probably correct
- Read text
- In groups discuss which sentences were most accurate
